There are several newspapers written in the Malayalam language. Most of them circle in India, but some Malayalam newspapers have their offices in the United Kingdom or the United States of America. Malayalam is a language spoken most widely in the following three countries: India, Malaysia and Singapore. The language is spoken predominantly in the region of Kerala in India.

The most common, India-based, daily Malayalam newspaper, is the General Daily. It was founded on May 21, 1976. The newspaper finds its origin in the city of Thrissur, which is the cultural capital of Kerala in India. The General Daily is an evening daily that follows the political, social and cultural developments in the Thrissur region.

The General Daily is a popular newspaper and is circulated widely in Kerala. In 1996, a new management was taken on for the General. The evening daily was taken over by the Chandys Group, a branch of the large Chazhoor Chandy family.

The Chazhoor Chandy family is a traditional family, which has been doing business in the Thrissur District for over a century. The General Daily is a traditional but modern newspaper that is also available online at www.generaldaily.com.

Other major newspapers published in the Malayalam language are: Deepika, Madhyamam, Kerala Express, Malayalam Manorama, Mangalam Daily, Deshabhimani, Kerala Kaumudi and Mathrubhumi.

The Deepika is the first and thus oldest Malayalam newspaper. It was established in 1887, and its first print was on a handmade wooden press. According to its site, the founding of the Deepika meant the beginning of elite journalism in the Kerala region. In January 1927 the Deepika became a daily. It re-emphasized the goals its founding fathers had set in the very first issue back in 1887:
To represent the needs of the common people to the rulers.
To protect and safeguard the inalienable rights of the people.
To fight for Truth, Justice and Freedom and to unite the separated brethren of Kerala.

The Deepika claims it has always lived up to these goals, while at the same time being able to  maintain its impartiality and be an independent newspaper. Readership of the Deepika consists for the greatest part of the affluent strata and the higher educated class of the Kerala society. More than 1200 professionals work for Deepika. It is distributed by 7848 agents all over India. In August 1989, Deepika came in the hands of Rashtra Deepika Ltd, a newly floated public limited company.

The Madhyamam is a fairly young Malayalam newspaper. It was established as a daily paper in 1987 at Silver Hills near Calicut, India. The core readership of Madhyamam is formed by the Malabar Muslim community. The start of the newspaper was a landmark in Malayalam journalism; it was inaugurated by Kuldip Nayar, a well-respected veteran Indian journalist. The Madhyamam plays an important role, setting new trends in news content, advertisements, visuals and social commitment. It distributes seven editions in the State of Kerala, and has an impressively large readership. Apart from the daily, the Madhyamam publishes the Madhyamam Weekly, and for its expatriates the Gulf Madhyamam.
The Gulf Madhyamam is published from Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, Dammam and Kuwait.
